Back in 1973, The Amazing Spider-Man comic experienced a tragic loss, Gwen Stacy. During issues #121 and #122, Gwen finds herself in a huge predicament. But first, who was Gwen? how does Mary Jane fit into this? and most importantly, what led to her downfall?

Gwen Stacy showed up in issue #31 of The Amazing Spider-Man in December of 1965. Her full name is Gwendolyn Maxine “Gwen” Stacy. Gwen met Peter Parker during their time spent at the Empire State University, during the time she makes advances towards Peter. Gwen’s father, George Stacy, is a police Captain, who causes problems for both Gwen and Peter(although under mind control). Before Gwen finally gets settled down with Peter, she ends up dating both Flash Thompson and Harry Osborn. The relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen started dating shortly after Peter and Mary Jane disbanded.

Through out the comic(roughly 90 issues) Gwen stayed as a supporting character until her demise in issue #121 and #122.

In issue #121, Gwen was kidnapped by the Green Goblin. The Green Goblin uses her to lure Spider-Man to the George Washington Bridge where the two meet and go head to head. The Goblin throws Gwen off the bridge, Spider-Man shoots his web and catchers her by the legs.

The end of Gwen Stacy

What wasn’t clear in this issue is that we don’t know the actual cause of death for Gwen. It’s possible the Green Goblin had broken her neck before tossing her off the bridge, or that Spider-Man’s web stopped her suddenly in the air, causing the whiplash to snap her neck. Later on in issue #125, the cause of death is determined to be from whiplash.

With the new Spider-Man movie coming out, a lot of questions are coming up about Gwen and whether or not she will survive this film. Emma Stone recently did an interview with Ryan Seacrest on On Air with Ryan Seacrest. Talking about the fate of Gwen Stacy in the upcoming Spider-Man sequel.

”Basically they’re going to see the continuation of the Spider Man story, which is the hero’s journey, and he’s up against a whole new squadron of villains and he’s struggling with promises he’s made in the last movie and the consequences of making those and what it’s like to be in love with somebody who you promised to not see anymore.”
